A little bit of background: The Master Gardener Programme operates in an expanding number of areas of England. After the inital pilot project in Sept 2012 the programme gained further funding from Local Food as one of 10 Beacon projects in the UK. This has enabled us to continue our support of the current cohort and support their development with two excellent extra training days. From February 2012 we are also recieving another year’s funding from the Big Lottery Fund Local Food Scheme, during which time we are looking for funding partners to continue rolling out the model. Whilst grand international conferences are being held at various exotic places, the price of food is rising everywhere. For the richer, food represents a relatively small part of their budget – but the poorer you are and the higher that percentage is. For the poorest of the world, it means death by starvation. It is estimated that around 10 million people a year are currently dying of starvation (about 30,000 per day); 1.4 billion are below the official poverty line; and another billion are permanently malnourished. It will only get worse. The rich world cannot pretend it will not be affected.

Benny Dembitzer will make a presentation of his book – SLEEPWALKING INTO GLOBAL FAMINE.  He is an international development economist; he was a member of the team awarded the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize.

You will be able to purchase a glass of wine or a fruit juice and there will be time for questions and answers.

We will also discuss whether there is enough interest in creating a forum where local residents will regularly meet with others to hear presentations on a range of issues of general interest.

The money can go to any good cause, a local community group, a school, a national or international charity. In this way we hope that the £100 can go to a cause that really needs it, while the person involved is also doing a fantastic thing to help their community by becoming Zero Waste!

Normally the workshop costs approx £90 per person but we are offering 30 places for a nominal fee of £10 per person. Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis but preference will be given to people who have a community project in mind.

The course will take place on Saturday 12th January 2013 at Roots and Shoots on Walnut Tree Walk, Kennington, SE11 6DN. It will be run by green roof experts Dusty Gedge and John Little (www.livingroofs.org) and will offer practical advice and instruction about installing a living roof.
